Shawn Cayce aka PUSH isn’t your everyday rapper. Raised in the Suburbs of the Pinole, California, he picked up rap when he was around eleven years old. Over the next eight years he developed a unique style of rhyme and sound that is distinct to say the least. In a day where Hip-Hop has been pronounced dead, Shawn Cayce dares to raise the bar lyrically to proof the music is alive and prosperous. However this Rappers story isn’t a typical one. “I didn’t find rap, it found me,” he often says. “Once I started I knew I had something. I progressive got better as time went on.” But just a year ago, Shawn Cayce found himself in Medical School. “Med School was entirely my parents idea. Being from an Indian house hold and proclaiming that you want to pursue music doesn’t exactly fly with the parents.” After 6 months of Medical School, Shawn dropped out and came back to the States to pursue a career in Hip Hop. “My parents first reaction was ok he’ll do this for a week or so and go back to school, but once they saw I was adamant about my decision they kicked me out of the house. But my aunty took me for which I was thankful.” That was in March of 2008. Since than Shawn has put out 2 Eps and 2 Mix-tapes, without every stepping foot into a real studio. “ I taught myself how to use Pro tools while I was in high school. I bought a condensed microphone, which was around $200 and a m-audio interface, plus my macbook laptop.” However, if you listen to his music, one can hardly tell that it was all recorded in the room of one of Shawn’s friends house. “Yeah it’s pretty funny, but I just listened to professionally mixed songs and did my best imitation of them in the terms of mixing. I can tell the difference because my ear is so used to it, but usually the only difference is that professionally mixed songs are a bit louder, but that’s mostly likely because of the files being converted so many times.” Just by his personality you can tell there’s something different about the 19 year old. His music compliments that hypothesis. From the topics of his songs to the way he makes music, all can be defined as unorthodox. “I don’t really write rhymes, not because of Jay-Z or Big. I didn’t want my mother to find my rhyme book, so I was constrained to keeping my lyrics in my head,” Shawn says jokingly. His last mixtape he completed 11 out of the 14 songs in 5 days. “ I kind of did that on purpose to challenge myself, and see if can I put out good music in a short amount of time, and people tell me that it’s my best stuff yet so that’s definitely a good sign,” he says. With influences such as Tupac, Eminem, and the Notorious B.I.G. Shawn will settle for no less that contending for the Hip-Hop crown. “ I know it makes people mad when I say I’m up there. They always say stuff like your not even signed or you’re Indian(Laughs). I really just have a drive for the game. I can’t explain it for the most part, but it’s like Michael Jordan with hoop. How the game changed him mentally and physically because the average height in his family was 5 10, but he ended up being 6 6. I sort of feel like that in the sense that, after picking up music, I transformed from being what I would have been if I never got introduced to music.” By speaking to him one can tell he has a way with words. “I see no reason to why I should compromise my dreams or my personality to fit a certain criteria. People who said I would never be able to rap, now slap my shit on their ipods 24/7. Opinions to me are like seasons, they change frequently, so I don’t bug over peoples views. Good or bad.” Humble or Conceited, Shawn is definitely determined to make his mark over Hip Hop. “ I don’t want to just be in the game, I want to dominate it. As long as I’m doing music, I want people to equivocate Hip-Hop to me. So when someone mentions Hip-Hop music, they instantly think of me,” he says with a determined voice. “I know I got a whole lot to learn, but that’s a part I’m looking forward to. Life is progression, and for me music is the tool I progress with. It’s going to stay that way, and for those who object; it’s like I said in my song “Who Rules You,” Ima sell these records cuz there’s a billion people in India It’s not gonna take effort.” -Hip Hop Mag DOWNLOAD MY NEW MIXTAPE!!!!!! http://www.zshare.net/download/65439291d5de760f/
